About Pissouri

Pissouri is a picturesque village located in the district of Limassol, Cyprus, thirty kilometers westwards of Limassol’s centre, between the towns of Limassol and Pafos. The main settlement of Pissouri is situated on a hill’s side at an altitude of around 270m and about three kilometers away from the bay area.

Nowadays there are two distinct settlements which were through years developed to the current situation; those can be named as the Pissouri Village Area and the Pissouri Bay Area. The total permanent population is said to be around 2000 people, where about 2/3 of them are Cypriots and the rest foreigners, mainly British people that have bought properties there.

Pissouri Village Area

The views from Pissouri village and its surroundings can be simply described as spectacular! To the East it is possible to see the countryside and the shore's line all the way along ending to Limassol town, and to the north Troodos mountains, including Mount Olympus (1952 m), the highest peak of the island of Cyprus. The village, by being situated on a hill means a welcome breeze during the Summer months, and magnificent views of sunsets and sunrises.

Pissouri village retains its traditional Cypriot character with a beautifully cobbled village square where once you arrive there, you can really feel that time has stopped.  Immersed in traditions, this village has preserved its charm. It is entwined with the vineyards and surrounded by mountains…. What a great place for a quiet holiday, away from the hustle and bustle of the town.

Residents and visitors can find all the handy necessities in Pissouri as there are several grocery stores, banks, internet café, petrol station, butcher shop, coffee shops etc.. There are an amazing number of taverns, restaurants and bars - and they are all good, serving food and drink of exceptional quality at really low prices.

At the heart of the village the Church of Apostle Andrea stands, designed in Gothic architecture it is a remarkable building.  The Stone that the church is built originates from the regions of Anogyra and Prasteio villages and was brought to the village in donkey-pulled carts.

It was the Pissouri community through volunteer work who built the church over 10 years and according to a marble plate embedded in a wall, the master mason ‘Hadji Pavlis’ who was supervising its building, fell off the top of the belfry on 31st September 1877 and was killed. Tradition has it that he is buried where he fell.  Until 1912 the area surrounding the church was used as the local cemetery.

Pissouri Bay Area

The beautiful beach of Pissouri spans to an extend of 2,2 Kilometers and has been awarded with the European Blue Flag.  This indicates that it meets all European standards of organization and cleanliness as well as the appropriate amenities. During the summer months there is the presence of lifeguards and the beach; also has toilet and shower facilities. Watersport activities are offered at the beach and sunbeds and umbrellas available for hire for a few Euros.

Several retail stores and good restaurants are located down in the bay, and you will also find an ATM machine.
